Livelihoods
In light of the risks encountered by farmers who rely on agriculture, due to the changing climate and the unpredictability of the market, households need to supplement farming with other activities to make ends meet. To help the villagers towards this goal, we enable communities to strengthen and diversify their livelihood options through our work in agriculture and horticulture, agricultural marketing, finance for development and animal husbandry programs.
In addition to these programs, Chirag also helped set up Kumaun Grameen Udyog (KGU) in 1996, with a mandate to reinvest all its profits back into rural development activities. The KGU’s products include scarves and shawls from their weaving center, knitted clothes and toys from their knitting groups, herbs, grains and more.
