Vocational Skills

The lack of employment opportunities for young people in the area is a significant social and economic issue. The contributing factors to this are the poor quality of education in the region (with young people leaving school without useful skills) the lack of job opportunities once those youth who do complete their education graduate, and the stigma attached to being a farmer. As a result, the community is faced with several negative externalities such as alcoholism and out-migration. Among the young people that choose to migrate, many have to resort to unskilled employment.

To address this problem Chirag has designed a vocational training programme by assessing the needs of young people and businesses in the region. The programme is designed to provide young people with skills that are useful within the region and would also strengthen their prospects if they migrated to other urban areas.

Chirag has conducted vocational courses in electrician and plumbing services, and in the hospitality sector. The boys who took these courses have generally been able to find suitable work in the neighbourhood. A tie-up with a software firm in Hyderabad has also been established, where Chirag has sent 15 young people (girls and boys) over the last 2 years to gain experience and further training.
