Chirag School
First day of uniforms at the School
Located in the picturesque Kumaon Hills, one of the key roles of the Chirag school is to nurture a child’s sense of wonder and curiosity for the world and their ability to relate to other people and nature.
In July 2006 a preschool group was started; since then a new grade has been added each year. The preschool has a two-year programme for the age group 3 – 5 years. In Classes 1, 2, and 3 there are 60 children and 6 teachers who run the school collectively. Most of the children come from neighbouring villages.
The structure of the day and approach to learning are child-centric. The developmental needs of a child are important criteria for planning the curriculum which focuses on health, play, art, rhythm, rhyme, movement, active participation in the group activities, home life, nature, festivals and music. Whilst it’s a Hindi medium school, a great deal of focus is given to Kumaoni and English. Kumaoni classes use stories, songs and dance to lay a strong foundation of regional knowledge. English runs throughout the curriculum and is mainly taught phonetically. Teachers are being trained to speak in English so that children are given a greater opportunity to use the language.
The guest teacher scheme is interested in individuals who would like to share their knowledge, skills or interests in any area with children. For more information please email info (at) chirag.org.
